Course: Math 501. Probability.

Prerequisites: Math 323 (Calc III) or equivalent.

Course description: Basic probability notions, classical combinatorial methods, conditional probabilities. Random variables and properties of distributions. Moments, moment generating functions, covariances, correlations. Transformations, order statistics. Convergence in probability and large sample properties.

Textbook: "A Rigorous Introduction to Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics", by Miguel A. Arcones.

Grading: Homework (50 %), two midterms (30 %) and a final (20 %).

Mid term exams: Wednesday September 26 and Wednesday October 31.

Final exam: Monday, December 10 at 8:30--10:30 am at S1140.

Rules regarding the homework:

1. Your name must be written on the first page.

2. Problem solutions must be written out in the order they were assigned.

3. The homework should be done without any consultation or collaboration. You may not collaborate with other students. You may not discuss your work with anybody. In particular, do not ask me about which approach to do a certain problem, whether your work is right, etc. However, please ask me about the meaning of the questions in the homework (or whether there is a typo in the homework).
