Dated Announcements

December 6: For avoidance of doubt: as on previous tests, you will get the tables of continuous and discrete distributions in the inside back cover of the textbook. You will also get the table of the normal distribution, exactly as in Appendix 4.

December 4: By popular demand, blank copies of the two midterms. Midterm 1 Midterm 2

December 3: Sample final exam, with solutions. Please attempt the sample final before looking at the solutions.

November 7: There are a number of important problems that can't be assigned in WebWork, either because I haven't done the programming, or it's a "show that" problem (e.g. 6.66). There will be some homework assignments which you won't be required to turn in, but will have to complete on your own. You can look up the answers in the student solutions manual. These will include, in Section 4.11: 4.155, 4.157, and 4.159. And in Section 7.3: odd numbered problems between 7.43 and 7.59.

October 28: Homework amnesty: for the next few weeks you can do any homework you have not yet completed for full credit.

October 28: Solutions for Midterm 2 are here.

October 27: Grading for Midterm 2 is almost complete. Mean: 68.6 (of 113), standard deviation 21.9.

October 22: Solutions for the sample second midterm are now available. Please try the sample second midterm before reading the solutions.

September 27: As promised, solutions for Midterm 1.

September 23: Homework Amnesty: all homeworks have been reopened and may be completed for full credit, if you have not already done so.

September 20: By popular demand: solutions to the sample test. Please attempt the sample test before looking at the solutions.

September 14: Reminder: you may use on tests any calculator which is acceptable to the SOA for use on Exam P. Here is their list of acceptable calculators.

September 14: Here is a sample test 1. I have solutions to this test and I am deliberately not posting them in the hopes that you will attempt the sample test without reference to the solutions.

September 12: In class we talked for a few minutes about the Equity Premium Puzzle. You can read more at the link if you want.

August 23: I mentioned in class advice on learning from the "Learning How to Learn" course on Coursera. I do not mean to suggest that you should rush out and take this course now, but thought the advice to study a little every day was on point. A summary of this course is available on Reddit.

August 21: WebWork accounts have been created and you can log in here. For your login id and password, please see the syllabus. Homework 0, which is due August 26, is a "welcome to WebWork" assignment, but it is required and counts for your grade.

August 21: Math 447 is a coordinated course, and this page has information pertinent to all 3 sections.

August 21: Web pages under construction! Check back again soon.

August 21: I spoke in class about Bayes' Theorem and tests for diseases. (See Problem 2.125.) Here is an article about someone who asked actual doctors this very question.
