Dates for upcoming exams and quizzes:
Final Exam on Thu, Dec 18, 5:40 - 7:40 in LH 02 for ALL Math 220 sections!

Welcome to Math 220, Business Calculus. This is the home page for sections 2 and sections 5. Here you find links to your syllabus, schedule, and other important Math 220 info. You will also find my announcements here rather than on Blackboard which I mostly use for posting your grades.

Math 220 home page for all sections of the course:

It is important that you familiarize yourself with this section as it contains not only the rules and regulations for this course but also important information about your mid-term and final.

Syllabus for sections 2 and 5:

This section specific syllabus provides additional material to the info on the Math 220 home page. This is where you look, amongst other things, for information on how your grade will be determined.

Schedule for sections 2 and 5:

From the schedule you will find links to daily lesson plans, useful definitions and formulas, video lessons and worksheets. Expect to use it far more frequently than any other web page for this course.

This link will take you to the quizzes and tests that were given in Spring 2013 . You will find it useful when you want to prepare for your quizzes and exams.

If you have trouble with any of the links on this site, please e-mail me at mfochler@math.binghamton.edu .

The bottom of this document contains a Q & A list (to be extended) of answers to some questions students have asked.

Answers to questions of general interest

Q: What's on the next test?

A: Unless an announcement to the contrary was made, it is the material that was taught through the end of the previous week. Example: The date for test 1 is Wednesday, October 1. The material you need to know is everything on the schedule through Friday, September 26: The material up to and including lesson 12.

Q: What's on the next quiz?

A: Unless an announcement to the contrary was made, it is the material that was taught through the end of the previous week. Example: The date for Quiz 3 is Wednesday, October 8. The material you need to know is everything on the schedule through Friday, October 3: The material up to and including lesson 14.

Q: Do I need to buy a code for my textbook?

A: The text is just a plain book. No software or web site comes with it.

Q: What editions of the text can I use?

A: The current version is the 5th edition, same as the one that was used in Spring 2014 (yellow cover). You can still use the 4th edition but anything older than that is unsuitable. Note that you will not save a whole lot of money: $45.00 for a new copy, $30 for a used one. The most recent edition has a gray cover and you'll see "Fall 2014" on the front cover

Q: What about that "DeMystified" stuff at the bottom of the class notes?

A: There is a "xyz Demystified" book series where xyz is, amongst others, one of the following choices: Calculus, Pre-calculus, Business Calculus, Algebra, College Algebra. The references in your class notes specifically refer to the following title and edition:
     Rhonda Huettenmueller: Business Calculus Demystified.
     McGraw Hill, 2006.
     ISBN 978-0-07-145157-4
     http://www.amazon.com/Business-Calculus-Demystified-Rhonda-Huettenmueller/dp/0071451579/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=undefined&sr=1-1&keywords=9780071451574

Q: Follow-up to "DeMystified": Should I buy it?

A: No, you do not have to buy it. I suggest this book as additional material for those of you who have trouble following the Geoghegan/Webster text and/or are looking for additional fully worked examples. I understand that the older editions of our text were more theoretical than the one we are using now and there was a true need for a book that provided additional application oriented material.

Q: I dropped the class. Why am I still in your section? Blackboard still has me in there.

A: The only way to get you delisted from Blackboard for that course you dropped is if your instructor removes your entry. Here is the problem: Until the add/drop deadline has passed people can enroll on their own, without need of approval from the math department. If the instructors see you listed on Blackboard but not on the daily enrollment list they get from I/T, they do not know whether this happened because you dropped the class or because you just added it. In the latter case, having removed you from Blackboard could cause all kinds of complications. I plan to leave everyone on Blackboard until Saturday, September 13, after the add/drop deadline.

Q: Follow up: But how do I know that I really dropped the class?

A: Go into BU Brain and look there at your schedule of classes. If you're gone then you should be fine even if you are still listed in Blackboard.

Best wishes for a successful semester!
