IMPORTANT NOTE:

This document is to be read in conjuntion with the information on the Math 220 home page of the Math 220 course, so BE SURE TO REVIEW THAT INFORMATION!

Home page for your section:

That section home page will undergo many changes during the semester. You will find here not only solutions to the worksheets and quizzes but also a "Answers to questions of general interest" section which serves as a FAQ for things you might like to know.

Schedule:

The schedule for this session can be found here

Attendance:

You can earn up to 30 points extra credit by attending your class. I shall take attendance in all classes and look at the percentage of all classes you attended that do not have a quiz or exam scheduled. If, for example, you showed up in about one third of such classes then you have earned an extra 10 points.

Math assistance:

Besides coming to see me you also can visit the Math Help Room (OW-235) at any time throughout the business day and math tutors will help you free of charge. Here is the Schedule for the Help Hoom

Homework:

Try to solve as many exercises in the worksheets as possible. Your work will not be collected but you are strongly advised to do the exercises in order to succeed in the course. I shall do only some of those exercises during class, but solutions will be made available to most if not all of those exercises after class.

Quizzes and exams:

There will be a total of 8 quizzes, 4 exams and the final exam. The following information was changed on September 21: Unless you receive a notification to the contrary, all quizzes and exams 1, 2, 4 will be held

  • on Wednesdays. This applies to both sections 2 and 5!

Midterm:

The date for the midterm is different for both sections:

  • Thursday, November 6, if you are in section 2
  • Wednesday, November 5, if you are in section 5

Final exam:

See the Final Exam paragraph on the Math 220 home page.

Makeup quizzes and exams:

No make-ups will be given for students who miss a quiz. If you miss it, you get a zero. No questions asked. To compensate for this the lowest two quiz grades will be dropped See the paragraph below on your grade .

If you will be absent from a test for a legitimate reason, you must notify me before the date of the test and provide documentation of your excuse. If you have a last minute emergency, you must e-mail me ASAP. Do NOT wait until the following class. A make-up will be given only if you provide valid documentation of your absence and you contact me before the following class.

Special rules apply to the final exam. See the Final Exam paragraph on the Math 220 home page.

Your grade:

You can earn a total of 1,030 points in this course:

Final Exam 400 pts 400 pts
Exam 3 (Midterm) 180 pts 180 pts
Exams 1,2,4 100 pts each 300 pts
Quizzes 1-8 20 pts each for the 6 best 120 pts
Attendance 30 pts max 30 pts
Total: 1,030 pts

If the average for an exam (including midterm and final) turns out to be unusually low everybody's points for that exam will be multiplied by a factor bigger than 1. If the average for an exam (including midterm and final) turns out to be unusually high your points for that exam will be multiplied by a factor smaller than 1. This factor will be different for different exams but it will be the same for all students in the section. in that sense the table that follows now has to be understood as a

TENTATIVE grading scale:

850 - 899 pts   →   A- 900 - 1030 pts   →   A
700 - 749 pts   →   B- 750 - 799 pts   →   B 800 - 849 pts   →   B+
550 - 599 pts   →   C- 600 - 649 pts   →   C 650 - 699 pts   →   C+
500 - 549 pts   →   D Below 500 pts   →   F

Best wishes for a successful semester!
