Math 330 Announcements and Q&A

The Q&A section is below the announcements!

1. Math 330 Announcements

5/16/2019 I have published your grades, including your letter grade, to BB. The grades for the final exam are also posted anonymously to the grades page.
It was a joy to have you as my students. Good luck for the future! -- Michael Fochler --
5/14/2019 Your points for your grade will be computed as follows: QSum + Exam 1 + Exam 2 + Final + hwkAdj
5/14/2019 I have posted the grades of all 10 quizzes, all 18 homework assignments, and both midterms to BB. The "hwkAdj" entry contains the properly scaled points for your homework: I have taken your homework total and multiplied it by 400/58 (58 was the perfect score). I do not know whether there will be an adjustment to your total points until I have graded the final exam. I intend to do that on Thursday.
5/11/2019 Reminder: My Math 330 review (not the UTS review sessions) will take place Sunday, May 12, from 1:00 until 4:00 in WH 100 B. If all students have left the session before 4:00 then I'll also leave the class room, but you still can find me at my office until at least 4:00 PM.
5/9/2019     a. Update to UTS finals review session (see 5/4/2019 announcement)   •   Location: Academic A room G007   •   We will have a good amount of time to cover topics from section A07 of Number Systems.   •   Peter G and Matt P will be covering the earlier sections (2-5ish) of the B/G textbook for the first hour or so. If people who missed that have questions or want to see what was said, there's a good chance they will have time to go back to that chapter.
b. Additional hint for homework 18: You are all set for part a since all you have to do for fixed x is show that the sequence y_n = f_n(x) converges to 0 if x neq 0 and to 1 if x = 0. For part b: do it by indirect proof. There are only 2 props and one theorem in ch.13.3.1, and one of those three makes doing that part of the assignment a triviality! You can submit your last draft of homework 18 Monday BEFORE NOON.
5/8/2019 The grades for quiz 10 and hwk 1-16 have been posted EXCEPT for homework that was only submitted today.
5/5/2019 I will bring SOOT forms to class during next week's lectures. These are the forms published by the Math department which ask you to express your opinions about this course in free form rather than giving a ranking on a scale from 1 to 5. The forms are meant to be submitted anonymously, so do NOT give your name. The forms will be collected when you take your final exam.
5/4/2019     a. Finals review session on Sunday, 12/5/2019 at 1:00 PM It will be at least two hours, and you can come and go as you please. I'll try to reserve WH 100B on Monday.
b. You were supposed to let me know by April 27 if you need to take the alternate exam on Thu 5/16. I have not gotten any responses.
c. Matt Pressimone from UTS will give a finals review session: "As with last semester, there will be a 3-hour session run by myself (MP) and Peter Gibby during finals week. We have currently requested Monday, May 13th from 2-5pm, but the time is not yet confirmed; additionally, we are awaiting info from UTS on where the session will be. The session will definitely cover the Beck/Geoghegan book; I should also be able to cover additional concepts unique to some sections (such as MF section A07)..."
5/2/2019     Homework 18 has been posted. Due Friday, May 10: You only have one week, and I will give partial credit!
5/2/2019     Everyone of you will get a point for problem #2 of homework 15 since I gave a bad hint and I made the problem harder than it should have been: I defined X ~ Y iff X = Y or [ X, Y not empty and there exists a bijection X ⟶ Y; X → Y ], but I meant to write X ~ Y iff card(X) = card(Y) (which is mathematically the same). You would have been able to deduce reflexivity, symmetry and transitivity simply by using the properties of "=".
5/1/2019     The grades for quiz 9 have been posted
4/30/2019     a. Quiz 9 will be given this Wednesday, May 1, Quiz 10 (last quiz) will be given the following Wednesday, May 8.
b. I'll settle this Wednesday the date and time for my finals review session. It will be at least two hours, and you can come and go as you please. Date range is between Thursday, May 9 and Monday, May 13, including Saturday and Sunday.
4/25/2019     a. The grades for exam 2 have been posted to BB and the grades page. Homework grades for #1 - #14 have been updated. Be sure to check your own records against BB!
b. Homework 17 has been posted. More reading for Monday, 4/29 than usual. Start early with written assignment #1: You can do it with what you have learned about continuity in ch.10.
c. I'll hold a two-hour finals review session at some time between Thursday, May 9 and Monday, May 13. Each one of you should think early about what time slots are convenient for you, including Saturday and Sunday!
4/22/2019     a. The grades for quiz 8 have been posted to BB and the grades page.
b. A new version 2019-04-21 of the MF doc has been posted. Only corrections.
4/19/2019     a. Homework 16 has been posted. Written assignments are due by Friday, May 3. It is worth 6 points!
b. Homework 15 has been updated: Reading assignment 3 was meant to be for MF ch.13.1.1 - 13.1.2, not for ch.13.1 - 13.2!
4/16/2019     a. There will be a quiz this coming Monday, April 22. Don't miss it!
b. Midterm 2 on Wednesday, April 24, will last only 60 minutes, and it starts at 5:00 PM. This will give some additional time to those who have to rush to class from a previous lecture. The scope of the exam is ch.7 through 11, and ch.12.2.2 (normed vector spaces) through cor.12.1, before the definition of area and net area.
4/2/2019     a. The grades for quiz 6 are now on BB and also on the grades page. Review your records and check them against your physical documents!
b. Linear algebra tutorial session Sunday 4/12/2019. If no one claims it I'll use WH 100B. Otherwise check my office door for the room. The building may be locked, so I'll be at 12:00 at the MAIN ENTRANCE. If you cannot get in then knock at the WH 100B window (if the session should take place there) and/or try all WH doors.
4/12/2019     I am going to hold a tutorial session about linear algebra on either
  Saturday afternoon: 2:00 - 4:00
  Sunday morning: 11:00 - 1:00
  Sunday afternoon: 2:00 - 4:00
  Tuesday morning: TBD
  Tuesday afternoon: TBD
Special considerations for Tuesday: If I do this on Tuesday then the time depends on room availability. For this reason I cannot guarantee a two hour time slot. Also note that I'll talk about some of the basics already in Monday's lecture, and I'd use some of Tuesday's time to fill in some of the gaps I'll have left in lecture. I will change my office hours if needed.
The decision when to hold the session will be made this afternoon in class. If you do not come then you have no vote. You can come and go to the tutorial session as you please.
4/9/2019     Homework 15 has been posted. Written assignments are due by Friday, April 26.
4/8/2019     Reading assignments for homework 14 have been changed since I had posted homework 13 with some delay: They now are the same assignments as for #13 with one exception: I added to Friday's reading ch.12.1 (Rn : Euclidean Space)

WH is Whitney Hall, the building that houses the Math department. This classroom is in the immediate vicinity of my office. I will make an effort to be in the classroom starting at 4:30 to answer questions.
2/2/2019     I have published version 2019-01-31 of the MF doc. I corrected some errors in ch.3. I also created for the first time in this semester and "addenda chapter". It is named "Addenda to Ch.3", and it was necessary because I added a corollary which thematically belongs in ch.3.4, but including it there would have changed some subsequent references in ch.3.
2/1/2019     I have uploaded your quiz 2 grades to Blackboard and the grades page.
2/1/2019     Homework 4 has been posted. Due Friday, February 15.
1/29/2019     I have uploaded your quiz 1 grades to Blackboard. I had to do so twice since I had uploaded invalid data the first time around (everyone got a score of 19).
You will also find the anonymous grades for everyone on the Grades page so you can see how you have been doing in comparison to your fellow students.
1/24/2019     a. The first two quizzes will be given next week Monday, Jan 28, and Friday, Feb 1. You will have the results in time for the add/drop deadline on Feb 4. Note that quizzes will generally not be announced!
b. Hwk 2 and 3 have been posted. Note that hwk 3 is due two days before hwk 2, will be graded only once, and partial credit will be given. Do not miss hwk 3: It is worth 10 points, and that might translate into as many as 70 grade points, i.e., two thirds of the 100 points you can get for one of the midterms!
1/24/2019     Things to consider if you want to switch sections (relevant not only for transfers within Math 330): See the top of the Advice page! not for August!
1/23/2019     Fixed up the reading dates of hwk 1: they are for this week, not for August!

2. Math 330 Q&A
This Q&A section is expected to grow over time.

Topic   Issue
General     Q:   I am a student with a disability/an athlete and need special accommodations.
A:   Send me an email and bring the signed form (athletes: your coach or team director, Students with disabilities: see the syllabus, "Students with disabilities" paragraph) to me. I'll review this form before I sign it. If there are no issues I'll bring it to my next lecture. If you have a disability, chances are that I want to talk to you in person to understand better how I can accommodate you, possibly in excess to what your form requests.
General     Q:   I want to switch from this section into another one. Is it possible that I will lose my spot in this one and not get one in the one I want?
A:   The short answer is YES, even if you are careful. See the top of the Advice page for the results of a conversation I had with our admins in January, 2019.
Exams     Q:   Are there some practice problems for the exams?
A:   Chapter 20 of the MF doc contains some sample problems. It is work in progress. I plan to add more problems in the future.
Exams     Q:   Are the exams cumulative? What about the quizzes?
A:   a. The midterms and quizzes are not cumulative in the sense that you will be asked almost exclusively about the material since the last midterm or quiz, but you may need to refer to earlier material.
b. The final is cumulative, but a disproportionately large portion will be about topics that were discussed after the last midterm.
Homework     Q:   What is the significance of the "Due Date"?
A:   Not much: If you submit your first draft earlier and if I feel like it I'll grade your work beforehand. If you submit your first and hence last draft at the last submission date I won't penalize you for waiting so long (other than having no more sumissions to improve your grade).
Homework     Q:   Homework re-submissions: Do I need to redo every proof that was already correct or just the proofs that were unsatisfactory?
A:   You only redo the problems that I did not mark as "done". If I tell you not to rewrite but provide some specific detail then you do so and you mark those additions with a different color (not red - that's reserved for the instructor) and indicate that you did so on your new submission.
Homework     Q:   Homework re-submissions: Do I have to also submit the old drafts?
A:   Yes: Staple the new one on the TOP of the older ones!
Homework     Q:   What about the multiple reading due dates?
A:   a. The staggered due dates for reading will help you to space out your work evenly so you won't fall behind.
b. You may be quizzed about the reading that was due by day n as early as on day n+1.
