Math 330 Announcements and Q&A

The Q&A section is below the announcements!

1. Math 330 Announcements

12/12/2020   Hello all,
All scores, including computed subtotals and totals and your letter grade, now are on Blackboard. The newly populated columns are
  • QSum: sum of all quiz scores
  • hwkSum: sum of your homework points
  • hwkAdj: hwkSum * (400/52) = hwkSum converted to grade points
  • TOTAL: QSum + hwkAdj + final + all midterm scores
  • TOTALadj: ceiling(TOTAL) = TOTAL rounded up to the next int
  • GrandTotAdj: TOTALadj + 40: an adjustment which takes into account the extra burden taking quizzes and exams online
  • Grade: The letter grade that results from applying the grading scale published on the course home page to GrandTotAdj.

I know that I demanded an extraordinary amount of work from you just so that you would not be completely left behind, but I made up for that by being very generous with partial credit when grading your homework and the major exams. Consider this: Nobody who kept submitting beyond homework 12 obtained a grade worse than C.
It was my privilege to be your teacher, and I hope that you all will be doing well in the future. With that first COVID vaccine having been approved there is an excellent chance that Spring 2021 will be the last online semester... ...Not really: There are some immense budgetary pressures to create an educational system without the overhead of maintaining a physical campus with people who must be paid US-level wages. Well, that's not for you to worry about, in particular, since most of you probably already are in your third year of studies.
Good luck to you all! -- Michael Fochler --
12/5/2020   All lecture recordings, including the Sat 12/5 finals review session, have been posted.
11/30/2020   Correction: Quiz 10 will be given on Friday, December 4 and NOT on Wed Dec 2!!
11/28/2020   a. Homework 16 has been published. No written assignments.
b. Quiz 10 will be given on Wed Dec 2.
c. I will hold a finals review session at a time of your choosing, Fri 12/4 -- Sun 12/6. Talk among yourselves to agree on a date and time.
11/20/2020   a. Homework 15 has been published. Written assignments are due on Wednesday, Dec 9by end of day. There will be one more homework, but it will be reading assignments only.
b. Quiz 10 will be given on Wed Dec 2.
c. Today's lecture has been posted.
d. I will hold a finals review session at a time of your choosing, Fri 12/4 -- Sun 12/6. Talk among yourselves to agree on a date and time.
11/16/2020   a. Homework 14 has been published. Written assignments are due on Monday after Thanksgiving.
b. Quiz 9 will be given on Wed 11/18. Be sure to study contact points, closures, boundaries, ... and the chapter on completeness in metric spaces.
11/10/2020   All lecture recordings are available.
11/10/2020   a. Due to the I/T problems at BU I will not have any connectivity of my laptop when on campus, and for me that is the case on Tue, Thu, Sat, Sun. On those days I will only check my email in the evening, so be sure to cc your TA if your email is urgent.
b. The above also is the reason that I have moved my Tuesday office hours to Wednesday, 10:00-11:30 until further notice.
11/8/2020   a. You may have seen Sunday afternoon's B-Alert about faculty not being allowed to use their own computers on campus. My poor eyesight does not permit me to use the small size monitors of the campus owned computers and I thus will hold the Monday, 11/9 lecture remotely and NOT in UU-206. Do not come to lecture tomorrow!
B-alert asserts, and the Mathd department's I/T admin confirms, that students are not affected by the incident. Thus I understand that you students have nothing to worry about if you connect to Zoom, BB, and other services from your dorm room.
b. In particular quiz 7 will be given tomorrow, 11/9/2020.
11/6/2020   Thr remaining quizzes for this semester are scheduled as follows:
  •   Quiz 7: Mon 11/9   •   Quiz 8: Fri 11/13   •   Quiz 9: Wed 11/18   •   Quiz 10: Fri 12/4
11/5/2020   a. Homework 13 has been published, and Latex hints have been added to #12.
b. Zoom recordings are up-to-date.
11/3/2020   a. Midterm 2 has been graded, and I'll email you your proofs shortly. You should be able to see for the other questions which ones you got right and which ones were wrong.
b. The anonymous grades, also for quizzes 5 and 6, have been posted.
c. Blackboard should be up-to-date for homework 1-10. Be sure to double-check and let me know if there is a discrepancy between your records and what you see on BB!
10/31/2020   a. Reminder: Monday's midterm will start at 1:20, and the exam will only last 60 minutes. You must have your video on!
b. Homework 12 has been posted. Written assignments are worth 4 points!
c. The recording for yesterday's lecture is available.
d. Reminder: Daylight Savings Time ends today: You'll get an additional hour tonight. Be sure to adjust those clocks that are not updated automatically (wrist watches, ...)
10/27/2020   a. The date for the Math 330 final exam (and I assume for all your other lectures) has been set: Fri Dec 11, 2020; 12:50PM - 2:50PM On-Line.
Date and time for the make-up final have yet to be determined.
b. Scope for midterm 2 will be ch.6.10 (integers modulo n) through ch.10 (cardinality II). Like last time you will start at 1:20 and the exam will only last 60 minutes.
c. The recording for yesterday's lecture is available.
10/27/2020   Pandemic - Mental Health Resources: I and other instructors at the Math department understand that some of you may be having a difficult time during this period of physical distancing including feeling anxiety and stress; these are normal during a crisis situation like the one caused by the pandemic. It is an important time to know about how we can best care for ourselves and others. Some of you have already reached out and are seeking support. But if you haven’t already done so, I highly encourage you to reach out for support. There are lots of resources and support systems on and off campus that may help you or provide you information on how to help a friend who may be in need. It is very important to remember you are not alone and we will be stronger together during this global crisis. If you need help, please reach out for support or if you think someone else needs support, please encourage them to reach out for support.

10/25/2020   a. Scope of Monday's quiz: ch.8.4 - thm.9.14 of ch.9.8.
b. Friday's lecture and the linear algebra tutorial have been posted.
10/22/2020   a. There will be a quiz on Monday, not tomorrow.
b. I have posted homework 11 and version 2020-10-22 of the MF doc with an addition useful for hwk 11.
c. All lecture recordings are posted.
10/15/2020   a. Reminder: There will be a quiz on Monday.
b. I have posted homework 10.
c. All lecture recordings are posted.
10/14/2020   a. I am behind with grading, so I am extending the deadline for homework 7 for a full week to Friday, Oct 23.
b. I am also behind with quizzes. There will definitely a quiz (#5) this coming Monday, Oct 19, and quiz #6 could be as early as Friday of next week. The scope for quiz 5 will be ch.6.11 (The Greatest Common Divisor) through ch.8.3 (Cartesian Products of More Than Two Sets).
10/8/2020   a. Homework 9 has been published.
b. If desired then I'll give a tutorial on vectors and vectorspaces that covers the material in MF ch.11.1 and 11.2.1. It is primarily meant for the benefit of those who have not yet taken or are not currently taking a linear algebra course but everyone is welcome to attend. I would hold this tutorial on Saturday, October 16. The tutorial would probably last two hours. I would start as early as 10:00 AM and as late as 3:00 PM, depending on your preferences.
10/6/2020   a. Be aware that all your courses may be moved online on very short notice: The BU COVID-19 Testing Data Dashboard has an entry called "New York State Higher Education Threshold Measure" which as of now reads 78. As far as I recall this entry was a day ago at 61. My understanding is that, once this figure exceed 100, everything that can be taught online will be moved to online learning very quickly. There should be no disruption to this course since it needs to be taught for the benefit of remote learners anyway.
b. I have made the results of your midterm 1 problems available to you. As announced yesterday by email broadcast, everyone obtained full credit of 20 points for that problem since I had messed up one of the versions.
c. I have uploaded to BB the results for homework 1-6. I further have duplicated the columns for the quizzes and exams close to the start of your grade center, and the results for your first four quizzes and the midterm have been duplicated. This is done so that it is more convenient for me to calculate your letter grade at the end of the semester.
d. The grades page of the course website now displays the anonymous results for quizzes 1-4 and the midterm.
10/3/2020   Homework 8 has been published. No written assignments.
10/2/2020   a. Correction: The Monday, Oct 5 midterm 1 will be released at 1:20 PM and NOT at 2:20 PM! Also note that you must log in via Zoom with your camera and microphone turned on. I on the other hand will have my camera turned off.
b. All recordings of this week's lectures are available
10/2/2020   a. I remind you that there will be a quiz TODAY, Fri, Oct 2, and your first midterm will be on Monday, Oct 5. The midterm will be only 60 minutes, and I'll release it on Blackboard at 1:20 PM. That way you have 10 minutes extra time to prepare.
b. The midterm will require you to provide handwritten proofs. I have released a practice test named Sample-File-Response-Problem so you can practice file uploads. I won't be looking at whatever you do there.
c. Starfish tutoring for Math 330: I understand that one of the tutors is William Jones. Try to sign up with him: He took this class with me a year ago, and he probably is the only tutor who is familiar with the material I am teaching. That is not so important yet for this first midterm (although other TAs may be clueless about the material in ch.3), but once I get to normed, metric, and topological spaces the situation could be quite different, and other Tutors will not be as helpful
d. I should get out the next homework set later this afternoon, and grading of homework 4 and 6 should be completed before the end of the weekend.
9/30/2020   a. Written assignments have been added to Homework 7. The deadline has been extended to October 16. Start early: You will have to prove both existence and uniqueness of the division algorithm. That's much harder than anything you had to do so far!
b. I announced that there will be a quiz this Friday, October 2! Scope: Items of ch.5 not covered in quiz 3 and ch.6 through whatever will be covered in today's lecture.
c. Lecture recording are current through Sep 26. Look for today's recording later this afternoon.
9/23/2020   a. Homework 7 has been published. No written assignments yet, but I wanted to get this out early so you can pace yourselves for next week's reading.
b. Reminder: BOTH HW4 and HW6 are due on Friday, Sep 25. Also, I have announced that there will be a quiz either on Sep 25 or Sep 28.
9/18/2020   I have been informed that ∑ (sigma) notation for summation was not properly taught in some or all of last semester's Calc 2 lectures.   •   Please check NOW whether you understand the formulation (NOT how to do a proof) of Problem 20.1 and Problem 20.2 at the beginning of ch.20 (Exam Preparation).
  •   If you have problems doing so then you must close this gap immediately since on Monday I will teach and the recursive definition of ∑ notation, not just for adding a finite collection of numbers but elements of an abstract integral domain.   •   To learn about this subject you can google "summation notation tutorial" or "sigma notation tutorial".
  •   I have updated homework 6 with some links about this topic that I give to my Math 148 students (a non-mathematical and largely non-engineering audience) at the start of the semester.
9/18/2020   a. Homework sets 5 AND 6 have been published. #5 is a rather easy point getter, so do not miss out on that one! Graded only once, due Friday, 8/25(!)
b. The link for today's recording has been published.
9/16/2020   Lecture recordings for today and last Monday are now available.
9/11/2020   a. Tomorrows quiz #2 will cover only MF ch.3.2 - 3.5 plus B/G ch.3, NOT parts of MF ch.5.1 as was previously announced by email.
b. Homework 4 has been published. Last submission due on Fri September 25.
9/9/2020   a. Today's lecture recording is available on the course materials page.
b. Message from the Chairman: The Math Department is hosting a Problem of the Week page. All students are invited to participate.
9/7/2020   a. For the record: no quiz on Wednesday either, but Friday is very likely
b. Office hours this week only also Wed 10:00-11:00: I was not on time for today's office hours.
c. 9/7 lecture recording is available now
9/4/2020   a. Homework: #2 is due TODAY, #1 on Monday 9/7, #3 (just published) on Fri 9/18.
b. I announced Quiz 2 for Monday 9/7, but I am having second thoughts: The material of ch.3.2 - 3.4 is not well suited for an online quiz, and I am considering given a quiz at a later date instead. I will post a follow up announcement tomorrow (Saturday).
c. Reminder: Next week's classes are online, so do not come to UU 206!
9/2/2020   Today's lecture recording is available on the course materials page. Sorry for the 5 minute or so outage towards the end: Be sure you also see the last part!
8/31/2020   a. If you wish to be a part of the GroupMe chat with the people in Math 330 A06 and connect with them, download the GroupMe app using your Binghamton email address. Once you have done that, make sure that fellow classmate Jonathan Wong knows your email address so he can add you to the group.
b. Today's lecture is available on the course materials page.
c. Zoom meeting IDs during in-class weeks: I send out Zoom meeting IDs for all lectures and I record them all regardless whether I teach in class or from my office: There are online participants in this course, and they need to have that ID anyway.
8/29/2020   Zoom links for this week's lectures are available on the course materials page
8/28/2020   HW #2 has been published. Graded only once (no resubmissions)! It's almost exclusively limited to ch. 2.1 and 2.2. Check out the Latex hints I have given!
8/25/2020   DO NOT ATTEND CLASS IF YOU ARE REQUIRED TO ISOLATE! All lectures are streamed online and will be recorded, so you need not worry about missing anything.
1/20/2020     Version 2020-01-18 of the MFdoc has been published. Do not use the 2019-12-16 version! This has the following consequences: Some of the references given in homework 1 have been changed. Be sure to get the updated version from the website!
8/4/2020     The first lecture will be on Wednesday, August 26. Don't miss it! A Zoom link will be emailed to you and published on BB. Homework about your math background (email - see "Homeworkzero" on Homework page!) is due on Friday, August 28, and homework 1 is due on Monday, September 7. The first quiz will be administered as early as August 28.

2. Math 330 Q&A
This Q&A section is expected to grow over time.

Topic   Issue
General     Q:   I am a student with a disability/an athlete and need special accommodations.
A:   Send me an email with the filled and signed form (athletes: your coach or team director, Students with disabilities: see the syllabus, "Students with disabilities" paragraph) to me. I'll review this form before I sign it. If there are no issues I'll bring it to my next lecture. If you have a disability, chances are that I want to talk to you in person (or Zoom) to understand better how I can accommodate you, possibly in excess to what your form requests.
General     Q:   I want to switch from this section into another one. Is it possible that I will lose my spot in this one and not get one in the one I want?
A:   The short answer is YES, even if you are careful. See the top of the Advice page for the results of a conversation I had with our admins in January, 2019.
Exams     Q:   Are there some practice problems for the exams?
A:   Chapter 20 of the MF doc contains some sample problems. It is work in progress. I plan to add more problems in the future.
Exams     Q:   Are the exams cumulative? What about the quizzes?
A:   a. The midterms and quizzes are not cumulative in the sense that you will be asked almost exclusively about the material since the last midterm or quiz, but you may need to refer to earlier material.
b. The final is cumulative, but a disproportionately large portion will be about topics that were discussed after the last midterm.
Homework     Q:   What is the significance of the homework "Due Date"?
A:   If your assignment allows several submissions then I'll try to get it back to you within 60 hours so you might be able to submit a corrected version. No (more) submissions will be accepted after the due date.
Homework     Q:   Homework re-submissions: Do I need to redo every proof that was already correct or just the proofs that were unsatisfactory?
A:   You only redo the problems that I did not mark as "done". If I tell you not to rewrite but provide some specific detail then you do so on your OLD submission the way I give my comments: You tag them with a bold faced @@XY where XY are your initials. If they happen to be MF (same as mine) contact me! Tell me that you made such changes at the start of your NEW submission (so that I know to check the old draft).
Homework     Q:   Homework re-submissions: Do later versions go into the same file as #1 or will they go into separate files?
A:   They go into the same file, so version 3 of homework 9 goes into JDoe-HW09.tex, before version 2, which is before version 1.
Homework     Q:   Homework re-submissions: Do I have to also submit the old drafts?
A:   Yes: See previous question!
Homework     Q:   What about the multiple reading due dates?
A:   a. The staggered due dates for reading will help you to space out your work evenly so you won't fall behind.
b. You may be quizzed about the reading that was due by day n as early as on day n+1.
Homework     Q:   What additional pointers do you have for homework submissions?
A:   a. Be sure that the changes you make in the old version (since I explicitly asked you to do so) and which you tagged with @@XY are easy to notice: leave some extra space at top and bottom!
b. Read my comments even for problems I have marked as done. If you disagree with some of my comments then don't just sit there quietly and anrgily, but come fight with me. Whether you convince me or not, we both will learn something.
c. Style: Your proof has a story to tell. Do it cohesively, not in choppy fragments that are hard to follow.
