Math 330 Announcements

1. Math 330 Announcements

12/9/2021     a. I have moved this course site to my archive which you can access from my departmental instructor's web page (bottom left). The new location is
  •   http://people.math.binghamton.edu/mfochler/math-330-2022-02/html/math-330-home.html
b. The small size of this class has allowed me to be very generous with my time outside lecture, and I hope that you have profited from these circumstances.
It was my privilege to be your teacher and I wish you all the very best for your future studies and beyond -- Michael Fochler --
12/9/2021     a. The anonymous scores of quiz 10 have been published.
b. I have emailed an updated list of all your grades to-date, tagged by your anonymous ID.
c. Reminder: My finals review session will be Tue Dec 14 @3:15; location: WH 309.
12/10/2021     There now seems to be a centralized schedule for ALL UTS tutoring sessions. The link: https://www.binghamton.edu/clt/tutoring-services/finals-week-tutoring-schedule.html
The Math 330 sessions:   •   12/10/2021, 2:30 PM, https://binghamton.zoom.us/j/94379104473, (Alexander Siong)
  •   12/11/2021, 6:00 PM, CIW Library (Evan Taber)   •   12/15/2021, 12:00 PM, CIW Library (Will Jones)
Alex and Will are former Math 330 students of mine and know all of the material I have taught you this semester.
12/9/2021     a. Scope of Quiz 10: MF ch.12.1.9-12.2.2, ch.12.3.1, ch.12.3.2 until Cor.12.4 (dominance criterion), the parts of MF ch.13 discussed in lecture.
b. The deadline to withdraw is tomorrow, Fri 12/10 @11:59 PM.
12/7/2021     a. Quiz 10 will be on Fri Dec 10, not on Wed Dec 8. Scope TBD.
b. I skipped most of Ch. 12.3.2 (Infinite Series) in lecture. The only exception: Prop.12.47 and a special form of Cor.12.4: Absolutely convergent series are convergent.
12/3/2021     a. My finals review session will be Tue Dec 14 @3:15; location: WH 309. If there is sufficient interest on your part then it will last for at least two hours: I have reserved the room until 5:30 PM.
b. Quiz 10 will be given Wed, 12/8. Scope:
12/3/2021     a. Since it is established that there are 62 homework points for this entire course which correspond to 400 grade points, the multiplier is 400/62 = 6.451612903.
  •   Example: A homework total of 50 points will be worth 6.451612903 * 50 = 322.58 grade points.
12/2/2021     a. HW 16 and 17 have been published. I had uploaded HW 16 already on Nov 26 but the HTML of this webpage was faulty and referred to HW 15 instead.
HW 17 is due Mon Dec 13, after the last lecture.
b. My finals review session will be Tue Dec 14 @3:15; location TBD. If there is sufficient interest on your part then it will last for at least two hours.
c. The anonymous grades for quiz 9 have been posted. I'll send an email with everyone's up-to-date grades later today.
11/30/2021     a. IMPORTANT: There have been some unfounded rumors that one and the same final exam will be given across all sections. This is not true: Each Math 330 section designs its own final!
Scope of the final: Everything I have taught is fair game. The final exam is not cumulative but a disproportionate amount of the problems will be drawn from the material not covered by the midterms, i.e., starting with chapter 9.7
b. REMINDER: I will give a finals review session at a date/time of your choosing between Sat Dec 11 and Tue Dec 14.
11/29/2021     a. Quiz #9 will be given on Wednesday, Dec 1. Scope: ch.12 through Proposition 12.27 (Minimality of the closure of a set), but nothing from Ch.12.1.6: Bases and Neighborhood Bases.
Be sure you understand what a delta neighborhood look like, not only for the Euclidean distance but also for the discrete metric, the sup-norm, and the L1 and L2 norms!
b. REMINDER: I will give a finals review session at a date/time of your choosing between Sat Dec 11 and Tue Dec 14.
11/26/2021     a. MF version 2021-11-25 has been published. Fairly minor updates and corrections for Chapters 12-14.
b. HW 16 has been published.
c. REMINDER: I will give a finals review session at a date/time of your choosing between Sat Dec 11 and Tue Dec 14.
11/18/2021     a. MF version 2021-11-17 has been published. Fairly minor updates and corrections for Chapters 7-12.
b. Quiz #9 will be given on Wednesday, Dec 1, quiz #10 will be given either on Wednesday, Dec 8 or on Friday, Dec 10.
In the latter case I'll give quiz 10 at the beginning rather than the start of lecture.
c. I will give a finals review session at a date/time of your choosing between Sat Dec 11 and Tue Dec 14.
d. I did not see any scheduling conflicts for the final exam (Fri Dec 17, 8:00-10:00 in CW 104). Please note that the only possible time for a makeup exam is later on Fri Dec 17.
11/17/2021     a. Anonymous grades for quiz 8 have been posted.

b. HW 14 has been published. Last submission on Dec 1, after the Thanksgiving break. No written assignments yet!
11/4/2021   a. The withdraw option deadline has been moved by a full month from Nov 10 to Dec 10, 11:59 PM.

11/2/2021     a. HW 13 has been published. Last submission on Nov 19.
11/2/2021     a. I forgot to transfer yesterday's changes to the grades page. Please check again now.

b. Quiz #5 will be given on Monday, October 18. Scope has been narrowed down to ch.6.4 - ch.7.1 Excluded are ch.6.5 (optional) and ch.6.14 (skipped in lecture).

b. I will assign to each one of you a random ID which remains valid for the remainder of this semester and send an email broadcast with all scores to-date later today.
This email will not contain your names but that ID instead.
10/1/2021     a. The date and time of the final exam have been set: Fri. Dec 17, 2021 @08:00 AM - 10:00 AM in CW 104
The time of the makeup exam still has to be determined but it also will be on Fri. Dec 17, 2021
since I cannot give the makeup before the regularly scheduled exam and Dec 17 is the last day of finals.
b. What will be particularly important for the midterm (but note that everything else in scope might also be important):
• Induction (see also the examples in ch.20.1: Sample Problems for Induction)

• Different behavior of max/min/sup/inf for subset of integers, real and rational numbers.
• B/G ch.3 on logic.
c. The midterm will start on Monday at 2:25 PM (not at 2:10 PM) and last for only 60 minutes.
9/30/2021     a. HW 8 has been published.

9/15/2021     HW 5 and 6 have been published. HW 6 is worth 6 points and will be graded only once!
9/15/2021     HW 4 has been republished: Removed overlap in the Wed/Fri reading assignments.
9/13/2021     Free UTS tutoring for Math 330 William Jones, Alexander Siong and Evan Taber are the tutors assigned to all Math 330 sections for this semester.
We are very fortunate to have two former students of mine, Alexander and William, among those three since this means that they are familiar with all of the material I teach in my class. I have no doubt that Evan will do a fine job too.
All three have generously agreed to introduce themselves this Wednesday, Sep 15, toward the end of lecture. I intend to stop 5-10 minutes early.
9/9/2021     HW 4 has been published. Due on Sep 24.
9/1/2021     a. The anonymous grades for quiz 2 have been published to the grades page.

c. Scope of tomorrow's quiz is MF ch.3.1 and 3.2. Learn Remark 3.4 by heart!
8/30/2021     a. Quiz 1 has been graded and the anonymous grades have been posted to the grades page. You can come to my office to pick it up if you like.
b. The HW 1 submissions should be graded by Tuesday noon. If you pick them up on that day you can submit version 2 on Wednesday.
8/27/2021     Monday's quiz will cover ch.2.1, 2.2 and ch.3.1 through Theorem 3.3 (before subgroups), thus functions and induction proofs will not be on that quiz.
I will start Monday's lecture by continuing ch.3.1. Then I'll go back to ch.2.4 and I'll skip the remainder of ch.2, then I'll continue ch.3 with ch.3.2.
8/24/2021     The date for the second midterm has been changed from Wednesday, November 10, to Monday, November 8!
The reason: The withdrawal/change grade option deadline has been (very recently) set to November 10 and I want you to know the grade for your midterm before that deadline.
8/24/2021     a. Correction: I stated on my Covid page that all lectures, exams and office hours would be held online. Of course that was nonsense! Lectures and exams will be held in class and office hours at WH 222.
b. Covid vaccination now is mandatory unless you have received a medical or religious exemption. For details see the top of the Covid page of this website.
8/21/2021     a. This website contains a new Covid page. Be sure to read it!

c. I will hold office hours on Tue 8/24, the first day of the semester.
8/2/2021     The first lecture will be on Wednesday, August 25. Don't miss it! Homework about your math background (email - see "Homework zero" on the Homework page!) is due on Friday, August 27, and homework 1 is due on Friday, September 3. The first quiz will be administered as early as August 30.
