TOPOLOGICAL METHODS IN GROUP THEORY

Ross Geoghegan
Welcome to the webpage associated with my book “Topological Methods in Group Theory”. I am using this page to provide a forum for discussion of ideas associated with the general subject matter of the book.
Readers of advanced mathematics books often think: “I wish he had included such-and-such” or “I know a shorter or better proof of that theorem”. I invite you to write up your ideas and email them to me for inclusion here. The address is:
I particularly welcome items which will help students get a better understanding. In particular, additional exercises and examples are welcome.
And, of course, I also welcome (if that’s the right word) corrections.
Example: I didn’t include a proof that the spine of Outer Space is contractible (Theorem 9.5.2) because the proofs I know about are either too technical or require methods outside the scope of the book. It would be nice if someone who knows more than I do would supply a neatly written-up proof. But if your proof uses new tools, please write things in a student-friendly way, either including the tools in full, or summarizing them with good references for the details.
