Math 221: Calc I, Sections 11 & 17, Homework

Go to the main page for my sections.

Homework Instructions

Readings include all the solved problems. The obvious reason is that they show you how to solve problems. The other reason, just as important, is that some of what you need to learn is only shown in the solved problems – they are part of the teaching process.

You learn calculus by doing problems. If you don't do the problems, you won't learn much.

You haven't solved the problem if you haven't written out all the work. If you did work in your head, write it down.
On quizzes and tests, if you don't have complete (and correct) work, you'll lose credit. A correct answer without correct work will be virtually worthless. You have been warned! ):(

Graphing: Don't use graphing calculators to graph functions! When you rely on the calculator, you learn very little. How you learn is by trying to figure out how to make a good graph. (This is most likely to be useful if you ever use math later in life.) At most, check your work against the graphing calculator (but I don't recommend it).

Whenever the book says to use a graphing calculator, I want you to graph without a calculator (except to calculate difficult numbers).

Homework Assignments

Do these assignments before the date due! Remember that if you fall behind, it will become very, very hard to catch up. (That's how calculus goes.)
