Sculptures from Fall 2020

by Alex J. Feingold

On this page will be pictures of sculptures I made in Fall 2020.

The first sculpture, completed on November 21, 2020, was a (3,1) torus knot carved from a 3"x6"x6" block of spalted tamarind wood. The final size after carving and polishing was 5.5"x5.5"x2".

The second sculpture, completed on December 9, 2020, was a (3,5) torus knot carved from a 2"x6"x6" block of Padauk wood. The final size after carving and polishing was 5.75"x5.75"x2".

Below are pictures of a 3D printed sculpture of a design I created many years ago based on the Star of David, originally made by soldering thin metal rods together. Four such stars are placed on the faces of a tetrahedron, so that each star touches an adjacent star at three points. Three of these pictures show a 3D printed version made from strong flexible plastic where each line segment of each star is 3" long. The second three pictures show a 3D printed version made from Rhodium plated brass where each line segment of each star is 1.5" long. I received these models from Shapeways.com on Jan. 12, 2021.

Here are three pictures of a pair of (3,5) torus knots made from Amarela wood, completed on Jan. 22, 2021. The original wood block from which they came was 3"x6"x6", but I cut that block into two pieces, each about 1.5"x6"x6".

Here are three pictures of a (3,5) torus knot made from another piece of Padauk wood, completed on Jan. 31, 2021. The original wood block was 2"x6"x6", but the final result measures 1.75"x5.5"x5.5".
