Math 148 Announcements

5/23/2021     a. The anonymous grades for the final exam have been posted to the grades page of my course website.
b. Your letter grades for the course have been determined and entered into BU Brain. They are based on the grading scale which has been published near the bottom of the syllabus as "tentative". You see it here for your convenience:
850 - 899 pts   →   A- Above 900 pts   →   A
700 - 749 pts   →   B- 750 - 799 pts   →   B 800 - 849 pts   →   B+
550 - 599 pts   →   C- 600 - 649 pts   →   C 650 - 699 pts   →   C+
500 - 549 pts   →   D Below 500 pts   →   F

Your letter grades was computed by adding the following (see syllabus)
     •   Sum of your 10 best quiz grades (no show = 0 pts)
     •   Sum of your 4 best homework grades
     •   Midterm + final exam grades
     •   Attendance points
Each section BrightSpace contains a column which contains this sum. In addition, there are
     •   FIVE BONUS POINTS (not announced in the syllabus)
The purpose of the bonus points is to ensure that none of you is missing "only" one or two or three or four or five points to obtain that next better grade: You are lacking at least six points and, sorry, no amount of pleading on your part will cause me to bump up your grade.
c. It may take several weeks before the grade for this course will show on your transcripts. Please be patient.
d. Saying Goodbye: It was my privilege to teach you the fundamentals of statistics and I hope that you will profit from what you have learned in future semesters and in your professional lives.
Stay safe and healthy. Best wishes for the future. -- Michael Fochler --
5/16/2022 Additional announcements for the Final exam:
a. How to locate your seat for the final: LH 1 layout is HERE. Sections 1, 2, 5, 6 enter through the right, Sections 3, 7 enter through the left, sections 4, 8 choose either door.
Han Lim, Chris and Jeff will stand at a spot that separates their two sections.
For example, you should not pass Chris if you belong to section 1, and you should pass him if you are in section 5.
b. Bring your BU student ID and leave it face up on your desk
c. SOOT forms: If you did not pick up a form during my finals review then you will find blank forms outside LH1 in front of the main doors. We'll have a spot for the filled forms close to the blackboard. Place those face down in the middle of the stack.
5/16/2022 Final exam on Wed 5/18/2022, NOT on Thu 5/19, at 8:00 AM at LH 1:
a. The exam will start at 8:00 AM and end at 10:00 AM. It is imperative that you do not move in before we tell you to: First we must distribute the exams.
Carry your backpack in your hand so it will less time for you to squeeze by others to get to your seat! The schedule page had conflicting information about the date: It listed Wed May 18 in one spot and Thu May 19 in another. I have fixed those web pages.
b. Remember that the exams are labeled and you will incur a 50 points penalty if you work on another person's exam. Approach your TA if you cannot locate your seat but, if we switched you from another section, check that one, too for your exam!
c. Makeup exam: I moved this exam from Thursday, May 19, to Friday, May 20. to make it less likely that you will still be ill at that time.
d. Reread the May 6 announcement concerning the final exam!
5/6/2022 a. The anonymous grades for midterm 3 have been posted.
b. I will bring free form SOOT forms to today's review session and the final exam.
5/6/2022 a. Today's lecture is about chapter 27. Consider it optional since it's material is not on the final exam
b. I will publish the anonymous chapter 3 grades once I have the data from all TAs.
c. The course materials page now contains a link to a study guide for the final exam. It was created by Chris Schroeder.
d. My review sessions will be very different from lecture: the audience decides, to a large degree, what I'll talk about. If you have no (more) questions then I'll pick topics on my own. I will put more stress on the earlier chapters since the final is cumulative and you will probably have forgotten more about that earlier material.
e. Scope of the final exam: Review the Finals prep sheet to understand what material will NOT be on the final exam.
You can also find this link on the Course material page. This document is up-to-date even though it was originally published for the Fall 2019 exam.
f. I have published the cover sheet of the final exam. You can also find the link on the Course material page.
It shows the instructions you will see on this semester's final exam. Read them NOW: Seats are preassigned. Penalty of 50 points if you write on someone else's exam!
g. Don't forget that the exam will be in LH 1, not in Lh 2, and that you are entitled to bring a 5 x 8 inches index card. Review the syllabus!
