Math 148 Announcements

Date posted   Message
12/15/2018     I have uploaded your grades for the final and the letter grade you will see on your transcripts to BB. The total points you earned are displayed in the "TotAdj" field. I have applied the grading scale from the bottom part of the syllabus to that TotAdj field, and that's how you got your letter grade. For example, if your TotAdj value is between 700 and 749 then your letter grade is a B-. The anonymous grades for the final are also listed on the grades page of the course website.
I hope that at least most of you are happy with your grade, and I wish you a joyful holiday break.
It was my privilege to be your instructor. Good luck to you all! -- Michael Fochler --
12/11/2018     I had shown you during my review session a reference card and claimed that it was accessible from the course material page of my Math 148 site. It turns out that I never activated that link and you had to find that ref card in the "Tools for Success" page of the Pearson SDM site. I have now activated that link: SDM reference card. You might like to copy or glue some of that to your index card.
12/11/2018     There have been several requests to provide the answer keys for the midterms. I do not post the answers to the exams because I reuse some the material in subsequent semesters. I checked and found out that the instructor for the Math 147 statistics course has the same policy.
12/10/2018     No office hours on Monday, 12/10 due to medical appointment. Instead you can see me on Tuesday, 12/11, from 10:00 until 1:00
12/04/2018     Announcements for the final, I.
a. Format of the final: The final will be a full 120 minutes and many of the problems will be like what you saw on the midterms: some multiple choices and fill in the blanks, some free form answers, some lengthier computations. There will be problems for the later chapters where you are given computer output and you must figure out what to do with it.
b. Except for the final, all your grades should be on BB by the end of Sunday, 12/9/2018. If you have any issues, email your TA with me in the cc and ask to meet with her/him. Do so on 12/10 if you can!
c. Be early for the final: The exams are labeled with your name and you will lose 50(!) points if you are too lazy to look for your seat and take someone elses final! You must approach your TA if you cannot find your seat!
d. Bring your student IDs: We will make spot checks! Index cards are bigger than for the midterms: 8 x 5 inches. Don't turn them in with your final. IT IS OK to write with a pencil: the finals will not be given back to you, so there is no concern that you may alter them after they have been graded.
e. Pack your calculator and spare batteries or a backup the day before the final! Spend a few dollars on a backup calculator!
f. How to practice: I have said this many times: Best you take the fully worked examples of the text and try to solve them closed book. Review the summaries.
12/04/2018     Announcements for the final, II.
a. The Finals prep sheet which contains a chapter by chapter breakdown of what you may skip for the final exam has been upated for this semester's final. Link: See the course materials page!
b. I will bring the Math department's free form SOOT forms to lecture tomorrow, 12/5, and on Friday, 12/7. They are anonymous, so please do not write your name on them. I read those forms and I make adjustments to the way I teach based on your comments, so I am grateful if you let me know what you like and what you dislike about my course. Please bring the forms back during the final exam. I'll designate one or two spots where you can drop the forms (you can leave them blank if you have nothing to say).
c. The deadline to apply for the makeup final was Monday, 11/26/2018. If I approved you then you received an email from me. If you did not get my reply yet or you forgot about that deadline: Send an email to me AND YOUR TA immediately and show proof of your scheduling conflict to your TA before the end of THIS WEEK! Put "URGENT: Makeup final!" into the subject of your emails!
d. Students with accommodation letters: You must send an explicit email to me AND YOUR TA if you want to take the final at the testing center! If you take it at LH 1 then you will start with everyone else and finish up at my office.
12/04/2018     Announcements for the final, III.
There will be two Review sessions by Casey Kapklein for the final exam: #1 is this Thursday, December 6th, from 6:35 to 8:30 pm in SL 212. This session is going to simply be a complete review of all past exams. Students should bring their past exams with them. #2 is on Monday, December 10th, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm in UU 120. This will be a review session for the final exam, very similar to the review sessions Casey has held before the midterm exams You do NOT need to sign up for the session on Starfish beforehand, all review sessions are walk-in sessions (as opposed to CK's regular tutoring hours). You are free to come and go at any time. For questions about those sessions, email ckapkle1@binghamton.edu.
11/18/2018     a. Correction for A07 average for exam 2 (two!): Changed from 127.0 to 88.25.
b. The anonymous grades for exam 3 will be posted before the coming weekend is over.

b. The loss of last Friday's lecture has no impact on the scope of midterm 3 (ch.18-25}. I will finish up ch.25 in Monday's lecture and start with ch.26 (ANOVA). I had announced that I was considering the Nov.26 lecture optional, but I will need the time to make up for last Friday.
c. If you have a legitimate reason to ask for a makeup for the third midterm then you must request it by email (cc your instructor!) no later than Friday evening, Nov.23. If you become ill on the date of the exam you must provide a Dr's note that covers Nov.28!
11/14/2018     Review session by Casey Kapklein for Exam 3: on Monday, November 26 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm in Science 1 Room 140. The first 30-45 minutes she will briefly mention all of the ideas and formulas that students should be familiar with. The second part of the session will be free question asking time. Come prepared with questions from the textbook, old quizzes, the first two exams, and/or the internet. You do NOT need to sign up for the session on Starfish beforehand, all review sessions are walk-in sessions (as opposed to CK's regular tutoring hours). You are free to come and go at any point during the 2-hour time frame. For questions about the review session, email ckapkle1@binghamton.edu.

A:   No. You can do whatever is expedient, but it must look neat: Use a ruler for straight lines and erasable pencil rather than a pen so you can correct mistakes cleanly.
c. Q:   I just added the class. How can I catch up?
A:   You must read the text to catch up. That is by far the most important issue. The book is very well written and quite suitable for self-study. See your TA as soon as possible and make some friends among your peers.
