Readings and Problems

The assignments are from Sheldon Axler, Linear Algebra Done Right, 4th edition.
Think about all the recommended problems and hand-in problems.
Hand in the specified problems; I accept partial solutions and I don't expect you to answer every single one.

Read before class.
"Yes/no" answers are not solutions; always justify your answer. (That is true for all homework in this class.) You can turn in the work on paper any time up to 4:30 p.m. There is an envelope on my office door where you can leave homework, if you don't have it ready in class. (The envelope is always open.)
Read every assigned problem, both recommended and hand-in. Some of the ones you don't solve may have useful information.
I do not expect you to solve all the problems. Solve as many as you can do a good job on. A few good solutions are worth more than many bad solutions. Note that use of AI does not contribute to your learning (maybe the AI learns).
§ means "section".

0. Before Day 1 Chapter 1. This should be almost entirely review. Notice what's not, e.g., lists.

1. Week 1 8/19-21 Ch. 1 and 2 and
§§ 3A-B. F 8/21: 1B #1 and 1C ## 5, 6. Ch. 1 and 2 are elementary; watch out for tiny new bits. Ch. 3 is more serious and long.

2. Week 2 8/24-28 §§ 3C(8/24), D(8/26), E(8/28). F 8/28: 2A #7; 2B #1, 6; 2C #8; 3A #2, 7, 12; 3B #16; 3C #4.

3. Week 3 8/31-9/4 § 3F(8/31),
Ch. 4(9/4). F 9/4: 3B # 21; 3C ## 12, 16; 3D ## 3, 15; 3E ## 1, 2, 10; 3F ## 1, 2. § 3F will take more than one class day. Most of Ch. 4 should be familiar.

4. Week 4 (Tues, Wed) 9/8-9 § 3F, Ch. 4, and the (optional) duality notes. W 9/9: 3F ## 5, 14; Ch. 4 ## 3, 5. The duality notes are a write-up of how to compute the dual mapping T' of a linear map T; but see Theorem 3.132 for a simpler answer and proof.
In some Ch. 4 problems, the letter F means any field.

5. Week 5 9/14-18 § 5A, begin 5B. TBA

6. 9/23-25 Review. — Test 1, Fri 9/25, covering everything up to 5A (but not 5B).
